Academic Coaching is customized instruction that not only helps scholars master skills within a subject area but help to improve their performance. It involves examining a scholar's academic concerns and barriers to success with a focus on fine-tuning the following areas:

  • time management
  • procrastination
  • test preparation
  • note-taking
  • reading strategies

Academic Coaching vs. Tutoring

Academic coaching is more of a holistic form of academic support. Academic coaches help scholars with specific Although academic coaching involves aspects of tutoring, there is a big difference between them.  Tutoring is specific to class content, focusing on what a student needs to succeed in a certain class. Academic Coaching focuses on skills that apply to any subject, including organization, motivation, and study habits.

Academic coaching is a more holistic form of academic support. Academic coaches help scholars with specific academic concepts, but also help them. develop academic skills and strategies, set goals, and learn time management strategies.

While tutoring can be very effective at helping a scholar overcome a specific knowledge gap, there are some shortcomings to this style of academic support.  Tutoring does not focus on the bigger picture and does not address the foundational issues that may be causing a scholar to struggle academically. In addition, this form of support is much more comprehensive than tutoring because it addresses the immediate educational needs of students and the underlying issues causing academic difficulties.
